Urban Revolution challenges Liverpool to Bin Their Butts
A young Bath entrepreneur has declared war on cigarette litter and chewing gum, in an attempt to clean up the nation's streets.
Originally from Lamsdown, Chris Bradshaw (23), who now lives in Liverpool, has launched the innovative new UR Bin - a simple, secure and easy to clean device which collects discarded chewing gum and cigarette stubs - a simple measure that could save local councils up to £100,000 per year.
In the UK 120 tons of cigarette related litter is discarded on our streets every day, accounting for over 40 per cent of all street litter.
The launch coincides with MPs voting to back a comprehensive ban on smoking in workplaces from 2007, which has already led to fears that the problem of discarded cigarette butts littering doorways and pavements will increase.
In addition the news also follows recent calls from Council Leaders across the country for a 1p levy to be placed on chewing gum sales to contribute towards the cost of its removal from the streets.
Chris Bradshaw said: "The concept of the UR Bin came to me when I saw how effectively the Japanese have dealt with the issue in their towns and cities. By providing easily accessible and discreet waste bins, people will use them, cutting down on costly cleaning bills for local authorities.
"Each piece of chewing gum costs 10p to clean from the pavement and the cost of cleaning up cigarette waste runs into the hundreds of millions per year across the country. The UR Bin collects this waste before it even hits the ground - making it a much more effective measure."
Consisting of a stainless steel canister, which can be individually branded and is less than half a metre tall whilst providing a sleek and attractive profile. The UR Bin can be fastened securely to any wall or surface and enjoys a fluid emptying action, which utilises a special key for security purposes.
