NEW Urban Revolution cigarette disposal points will soon be appearing around the streets of West Sussex.

The Stub it Out campaign to tackle cigarette butt litter was launched in Worthing town centre on Tuesday.

The campaign is part of a two-week national attempt to stop the growing problem of cigarette litter following the nationwide smoking ban.

West Sussex County Council members wearing t-shirts with the logo 'No Butts - Bin it' and volunteers dressed as cigarette butts demonstrated how to use the new disposal bins, which have been designed to look like cigarette ends.

The key message of the campaign is that cigarette butts are litter and should be disposed of responsibly.

Failure to do so could mean a fine of up to £80.

The cigarette bins will be placed at various locations in West Sussex as well as being offered to companies keen to place them outside their workplace.

Tex Pemberton, county council cabinet member for Highways and Transport, said: "It's about cleaning up the streets.

"Because people can no longer smoke inside premises and pubs we are finding more cigarette litter on the streets.

"I want to provide the facilities for people to dispose of their cigarette ends safely."
